The “Pearls of Wisdom” art exhibition was a huge success at Ironbank, K’Rd in Auckland last night. First-time exhibitor Jillian Friedlander presented a collection of raw black and white photographs, and bold colourful paintings celebrating the four seasons and the tree of life.

It was also the launch of new creative space, The Salon, set up as a haven for non-established and established artists to come and exchange creative ideas and inspiration.

“Ironbank is an ideal place to foster and harbour free creative thinking – there’s already a dynamic community of creative talent here and it’s really exciting to be a part of it,” says Jillian.

“Pearls of Wisdom”, a collection of artwork from Jillian Friedlander is being launched at new artistic space The Salon at Ironbank this Wednesday 5 December (come along between 6pm and 8pm!) The show is free to the public and runs until 19 December.

First-time exhibitor Jillian Friedlander presents a collection of raw black and white photographs, and bold colourful paintings celebrating autumn in Arrowtown and the popcorn carnival of summer.

It’s the first to be held at The Salon; a shared space for artistic expression and exchange.

“It’s all about the layers of life. I want to show people as they are. Wrinkles, freckles; they’re all characteristics of life. Whether it’s good, bad or in between – the wonders of age are what gives you wisdom,” says Jillian. “Life experience teaches you to look at things in a different light and appreciate the simple things in life.”

She says the The Salon is a haven for non-established and established artists to come and exchange creative ideas and inspiration.

“In order to produce leadership there is a saying:

‘Justice must not simply be done, it must be seen to be done.’

This project is one of a series of sky designs produced by this firm using this attitude. This series approaches people, architecture and environment as interlinking identities and is underpinned by the assumption that if a building logically belongs in its ecology, both environmental and social, then the people that use the architecture will feel they logically belong there also.” Read more

Harriet Friedlander

2012 ARTS FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED THIS YEARS  HARRIET FRIEDLANDER RESIDENCY RECIPIENT.

Supported by the Arts Foundation, the Harriet Friedlander Residency sends an artist to New York for as long as $80,000 will last them. Harriet Friedlander was a dedicated supporter of the arts. She also loved New York. She believed that any young artist exposed to the city would learn and grow in unimaginable ways.

Arthur Meek

At a Macquarie Private Wealth New Zealand Arts Awards function held at The Cloud on Auckland’s Queens Wharf, Arthur Meek was awarded the Harriet Friedlander fellowship.  Arthur Meek writes for stage and screen, and has worked extensively as an actor. He first came to attention whilst at university for his award-winning short film Being John Campbell. He has been awarded the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award and a slew of awards and nominations in the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards. His work betrays a singular and witty contemporary voice, bold in structure and style.

Our congratulations goes to this worthy recipient.

Close to 200 Parnell business owners, friends and family turned out in force to eat, drink and network at Geyser, Parnell last night. Architect Andrew Patterson talked about his connection to Parnell and how great it was to be able to contribute to its architectural landscape.

It was a chance for local business people to take a tiki tour of Geyser and find out why it would make a great space to lease; getting up close and personal with the heating/cooling system, worm farm and car stacker.

Thanks to Parnell Inc for superb organisational skills, Daniel for his musical talent and Broken Shed for the cocktails.
